Daniel Alvarez

Hey, I am Coach Daniel. I join Waterloo with over 14 years of coaching experience with summer swim teams and USA club teams. I enjoy teaching others the science of swimming while maintaining a positive/fun environment. I believe that swimming is one of the most challenging sports because of the lack of oxygen and water surrounding the body. Due to this challenge, I compel my swimmers to put extra focus on body awareness and strive for exceptional technique. I have placed athletes in finals at championship level competitions.

I swam year round starting at age five, all the way throughout my college career. I had the privilege of training under Coach Bill Powell, Bruce Marchionda, and Steve Crocker at Western Kentucky University. My favorite accomplishment is helping WKU Men’s swimming go undefeated in my sophomore year. I specialized in middle distance free, and believe the 200 distance races require a well thought out strategy. I graduated in 2004 with a Bachelors in Sociology and Political Science. I have a strong background in strength and conditioning to develop core strength, power, balance and coordination. I believe that every practice and swim meet are great opportunities for swimmers to grow, learn and become better. Being able to pass on skills and knowledge to others is one of my favorite privileges and I encourage swimmers to always seek feedback from their coaches.

I believe these 5 elements of training are necessary for swimming success:

  1. Swim Training
  2. Strength & Conditioning (Dryland)
  3. Nutrition
  4. Recovery
  5. Mental Training
