If you are a swimmer or the parent of a swimmer chances are you watched history last night. Michael Phelps crushed the field to win his 22nd Gold Medal in the 200IM. This medal makes Michael Phelps the most decorated Olympian in the history of the Olympics. To find the original record you have to go back 2000 years to 164 BC to find Leonidas of Rhodes, an Olympic runner.

The race itself was incredible to watch and even more amazing was that Phelps jumped out of the water, stood on the podium and was back in the pool 30 minutes later to qualify for the 100 meter butterfly.

But how does Michael do it?  At 31 years old he appears to be at peak condition and is swimming his best.  Perhaps there is a scientific explanation for why Phelps is still winning golds.  Motherboard posted an in-depth article on the science behind his success.  It’s worth a read and an interesting explanation on why Phelps is still so dang good.
